--deep is no more broken than rm. Both are tools that do exactly what you tells them to do. If that is not what you wanted them to do, the fault lies with the user, not the tool. There is no good and bad about using --deep, only about using it inappropriately. Telling people never to use --deep is as misleading as telling them always to use it.
