Make a copy of your .config file if don't use /proc/config.gz.

Then do:
1) cd /usr/src/linux
2) make mrproper
3) zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
( or copy back .config in /usr/src/linux )
4) make oldconfig
5) make menuconfig
6) make
7) Do your kernel installation procedure

The most important part is "make mrproper". If compilation fails after this you
better rm -rf /usr/src/"your-version" and emerge a fresh copy of the sources you
use. For example
"emerge gentoo-sources"
