Run 'gcc-config -l' (letter L, not number 1), and then run gcc-config again with the number of the first 3.4 compiler in the list (e.g. 'gcc-config 1'). Then try your emerge again. If emerge is still working even with 3.3 gone, however, there's a decent chance you don't need 3.3...
