I've been reading that there is supposed to be a new-login button that appears on a locked screen if xscreensaver is compiled with +new-login. I've tried xscreensaver 4.24 and 5.00 both with +new-login, but neither displays a new-login button on the locked screen. This Debian bug describes and solves the problem, but if references a config in ~/.xscreensaver that doesn't seem to exist in mine:
