Ok, a bit more effort by me (smile) shows
root: etc> grep -r it87 *
conf.d/lm_sensors:MODULE_1=it87
and in that file
MODULE_0=i2c-isa
MODULE_1=it87
so I've commented them & will see what happens when I reboot later.
