Short answer.
1. Emerge xinetd, if not already installed
2. add a vnc file to /etc/xinetd.d - mine looks like:
service vnc
{
type = UNLISTED
port = 5900
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = nobody
server = /usr/bin/Xvnc
server_args = :42 -inetd -once -query localhost -geometry 1400x1050

3. Enable xdmcp in your gdm/xdm configuration file
4. start/restart xdm/gdm and xinetd
Note: There are security implications with having both xdmcp and xinetd
turned on. Please make sure that you understand those risks.
