You can run processes independently of the terminal/console that you started
them in. Try it out. You start a screen session like so:

$ screen -S my_screen_name_1
$

Then, you can e.g. su to root and start an emerge:

$ su
$ Password: XXXXXXXX
# emerge -uaDv openoffice

Then, you can detach the emerge process within screen from the terminal or
console that you launched it from:

Ctrl+a d (Press Ctrl and "a" together, release and then press "d" to detach):

$

You are back to the terminal or console that you started from, while screen
continues detached. When you want to re-attach it you run:

$ screen -x

You can have many screen sessions going at the same time. After you detach
screen you can close down the terminal, log out (but not shutdown!), kill X,
login remotely over ssh and re-attach screen to see what's happening and so
on. Read man screen for more. :)
