Dave, This may sound goofy...but do you have any external drives connected to you box, ie, USB, ieee, or card readers? When I had my extenal USB hard disk turned on or my internal card readers connected when I booted Gentoo, boot would stop and it would say the same thing..."cannot find the root fs on sdb3".
