Good day all,

I'm getting confused very quickly about what program/process actually
automounts my partitions and then what creates the volume name that is
displayed on the desktop for that drive, once it is mounted.
I was assuming that you create your mounts in fstab, and that those mounts
are read by mtab and /proc/mounts. But it seems like partitions that I don't
have listed in fstab are being automounted.
Example: I have a USB external hard drive that I have partitioned,
(/dev/sdc1 & /dev/sdc2). The sdc1 is a fat32 partition that I access in both
WinXP and Linux. In WinXP the fat32 drive is labeled, XPStorage. When I boot
into my Gentoo, sdc1 appears on my desktop as: XPSTORAGE, even though I
don't have any mention of this drive/mount in fstab. When I check mtab, the
drive and mount is listed there...where is it coming from?
This is kind of a brief explanation....but is there a Gentoo page or
documents that explains this whole process?
I have read of creating a link from mtab to /proc/mounts but my /proc/mounts
is linked to /proc/self/mounts....is this correct?

Sincerely,
Douglas
