Well I would like to thank the people who replied to my original
message.  The '&>' is quite useful and did aid in finding out the
problem.  It seems that when I was unmasking the kde-base packages I
forgot a few and these few were trying to pull in an older version of
the libraries, which wanted to pull in older versions of everything.

Once I unmasked those packages, I had no problems.
