Yes, that was it.

I've also noticed that although the typical directory ownership 
in /var/tmp/portage is portage:portage, there are some dirs which have 
root:portage; e.g.:

Should these be so?  BTW, my make.conf has userpriv in it.  Would it be 
relevant?
