The mplayer-plug-in ebuild contains
DEPEND="...
|| ( www-client/mozilla-firefox
www-client/seamonkey
)
i.e. it depends on either seamonkey or mozilla-firefox, NOT firefox-bin.
You'll have to emerge firefox from source to use this plugin.
