Not necessarily. The meta packages are there to pull in a whole group of packages, so you don't have to name them all separately. But if you just use a few parts of KDE, you would install just those parts. They will still pull in a lot of dependencies, but not everything KDE under the sun. But back to the segfaults... Seeing that it also segfaulted on kdepim, this really looks like overheating. Or like bad RAM. Make sure your fans and vents are free of dust, that connectors and RAM modules are well seated.
