I always stumble around endlessly whenever I attempt to use math
symbols in emerge commands.

To Neil B and others who have patiently explained this to me on
several occasions... I can only plead deep seated idiocy but I'm not
getting why this happens.

I want to `unmerge' (-C) versions of gentoo-sources prior to -2.6.20-r6

However this fails:

  root # emerge -vpC "<"gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r6

  >>> These are the packages that would be unmerged:

  --- Couldn't find '<gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r6' to unmerge.

  >>> No packages selected for removal by unmerge

==================================================

However the same command run in `install' mode works:

  root # emerge -vp "<"gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r6

  These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

  Calculating dependencies... done!
  [ebuild  NS   ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r5 \
                                USE="-build -symlink" 42,570 kB

As expected the next lower package is offered.
