I forgot to mention that I think you need to be using the CFQ 
scheduler.  Change ionice class doesn't seem to affect the deadline and 
anticipatory schedulers' behaviour.

Also I think I had an extra space in there after the -p.  Try:
ionice -c2 -p`pidof rtorrent`
