When the CMOS is run it jumps to the first drive MBR. Then it reads the boot code there which directs it to the appropriate partition. SUSE would have installed Grub boot code in the MBR and then it would go to the SUSE partition where /boot resides. You can either make an entry in SUSE's menu.list or grub.conf to boot directly your Gentoo installation; or you can chainload the Gentoo installed MBR in sdb, which will thereafter read your Gentoo /boot fs and boot Gentoo from there.
