I had the same problem. I've run emerge -aC kmail kdesktop. Then I've updated everything (watch out for the expat trouble, there are several threads about it), then I've reemerged kmail and kdesktop. Your settings and mails should not be deleted in the process. Remember to use --oneshot if you don't want kmail and kdesktop in your world file.
