pardon me if you've already tried this: does the
LiveCD/InstallCD boot? And can you mount the usb stick
then? Then you can probe the hardware using the
LiveCD/InstallCD tools, cat /proc/..., lsusb, dmesg
etc to get some clues. Leastwise you'll know that it's
not a hardware problem.
