My mistake, that file comes from device-mapper, rolling back to sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.19-r1 restores the old behaviour. The files in /dev/mapper are now symlinks to /dev/dm-*. It may be possible to change the rules so give the old behaviour with /dev/dm-* links.
