I went trough this too (I had to run X -configure to see it changed the driver). However, the intel driver does not seem to work that well, glxgears won't start for me any longer (Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual). Not that I would really need that one, nor any other GL application, it just bothers me to have something not working ;-). Have you seen this error too?
