I admin many gentoo system (approaching 50) and
many I do not even remember installing many. Some
of these systems, I rarely see/admin.

Ok so it has x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati installed.

How do I actually know that this driver, not the
vesa is being used?

Is this the correct syntax for make.conf?
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vesa"

Where is the list for what all of the different
options are for make.conf on the video cards choices?
Its not in /etc/make.conf.examples....

eselect opengl list
shows:
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1] xorg-x11 *

Does this mean the system is using
xf86-video-ati ?

What syntax do I use to see what video driver the system is
actually using? It's not apparent to me, and I'm sure there
is some little (syntax) command to tell what the system
is actually using. It's not ati-drivers, because it's not
installed.

Are the xf86-video-ati 3D or is my only choice there
ati-drivers....?

James
