Does she still have the old xorg.conf file somewhere? I'd try if X still 
works with it.

Try it, and then call xdpyinfo|grep dimensions in an xterm. Emerge 
xdpyinfo if it is not installed yet.
Many monitors also have a memnu option to display resolution and 
frequency.
