I found that if I use *any* xorg.conf file then evdev seems to be enough for me. However if I try to run without an xorg.conf file then I'm getting failures when starting some applications telling me it cannot find things. It wasn't important to me to not use an xorg.conf file so I continue to do it the old way and things are working OK. - Mark
