I have difficulties doing so. 'emerge --depclean' requires a recent
emerge --update --newuse --deep @system @world
which tries to update kde, as well.
I'm just trying to mask all kde-base packages, then doing emerge
--update --newuse --deep @system @world

Still, quite tedious.
