Well, it's back. I'm going to call this "unmasking creep". I had to unmask and keyword some stuff until portage was happy to install the updates. I had to add the following to package.unmask and package.keyword: =media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20091026-r1 =media-libs/x264-0.0.20091021 media-video/ffmpeg media-video/avidemux Maybe this will help someone else if they run into this "issue".
