The reason I am using fastcgi is that it allows a persistent server process and also passes Apache authentication information via REMOTE_USER. I'm using Apache to authenticate using mod_auth_kerb, and then passing the username to applications that want a username but can't deal with kerberos.

Make sure you have USE=apache2 enabled.
