There is a known problem with the 'polygon' option where it allocates too
much memory on the server for large polygons.
Try one of the newer polygon_(geojson|kml|svg|text) options instead (see
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Nominatim#Parameters). They are faster,
work well with large polygons and are also able to handle multipolygons.
