Dear Gwynne, Good luck with your book. It is important for somebody to spell out some of the dire consequences of global warming spiralling out of control. I am convinced we could see the collapse of civilisation unless something is done. If you've read Jared Diamond's book "Collapse - how societies choose to fail or survive" - you can see that our situation exhibits many of the conditions for failure. This is the grim reality - the bad news.
But you may be missing a crucial point about the speed at which things are happening, with forecasts, from some experts, of Arctic sea ice disappearing during the summer of 2012 or 2013. Scientists increasingly accept that there is no action rapid enough to prevent the sea ice disappearing except geoengineering to cool the Arctic region. You make much of the "moral hazard" of geoengineering, but we probably have no other option. Geoengineering with stratospheric aerosols and/or marine cloud brightening offers a good chance to save the Arctic sea ice and halt global warming to boot. This should be your urgent message to Prime Minister Harper and the world - the good news.
