Geo-Engineering Inquiry Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Select Committee hears our evidence on geo-engineering November 17 IMechE’s Head of Environment, Dr Tim Fox, gave oral evidence to the House of Commons IUSS Select Committee’s inquiry into geo-engineering on Monday 17 November 2008. The oral evidence session formed part of the Committee’s wider engineering inquiry, which has been underway since February. Tim briefed the group of MPs on the Institution’s view of this new and exciting branch of engineering. Geo-engineering is an emerging approach to the challenge of climate change that has the potential to form a third branch of our response, alongside mitigation and adaptation. At present, the discipline is very much in its infancy and little engineering feasibility assessment has yet taken place. Tim called for more cross-disciplinary research into the area, potentially based at the Tyndall Centre, which will help determine geo-engineering’s potential. The Committee, keen to learn more, quizzed Tim on the prospects for geo-engineering as a means to inspire the next generation. Currently, the Institution is running a ‘cooling the planet’ competition that brings together young graduate engineers to present feasible engineering alternatives to reverse the effects of global warming. More generally, young people tend to be enthused by sustainability and see engineering as a means to tackle climate change.
