Royal Society Geoengineering Working Group Chair John Shepherd explains the
reasons for their inquiry to Radio New Zealand in this APX 13 min interview
that aired 12-5-08. The goal is to separate the wheat from the chaff insofar
as the technical feasibility of the proposed technologies as well as evaluate
the social and legal aspects. The end product should be useful to policymakers
in determining which schemes to consider funding. They will draw upon outside
technical experts as needed and expect to issue their findings by June of 2009.
Proposals touched on included enhanced silicate weathering, "mirrors" in
space, sulfate aerosols and basalt sequestration. As usual, the journalist led
the discussion towards the negative side of the debate.
