Hi all,

The reports from Poznan do suggest a note of desperation. I am glad Albert now
agrees that geoengineering has to be part of the solution. I hope others will
be persuaded.

The rapidity of Arctic sea ice summer retreat is an immediate problem. That
web page, which Albert refers to, contains this link:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7692963.stm

If the last winter (2008) ice had thinned 10% below the 2002-2008 average, and
the minimum extent this September (2008) was just a little over the record in
2007, then the volume of ice was almost certainly a record minimum this
September.

This is why Albert and I believe that the sea ice could practically disappear
at end summer 2011, especially if things go against us, e.g. with an El Nino
and increased solar activity. (We've not had an El Nino since 1998, and solar
activity has been low - hence little overall warming.)

BTW, the volume of ice is a better indicator than extent, as it is an
integration of temperature over time. This is similar to the "glacier ice mass
loss" indicator (also "cumulative mean thickness"), which has shown a
consistent decline since mid 80s, but note flattening off for the two years of
Pinatubo volcanic aerosol cooling (1991-2), e.g. at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Glacier_Mass_Balance.png

Cheers,

John

Climate > BBC Report on Inadequacy of CO2 Cuts

  Hi All,

This BBC report appeared today outlining the rather dire prospects to manage
climate change.

I think that geoengineering is definitely now required as a part of solution
to this worsening mess.

  Yours sincerely,

  Veli Albert Kallio, FRGS

  Poor countries 'need carbon cuts'

Developing countries need to make big cuts in greenhouse gas emissions if
"dangerous" climate change is to be avoided, a report warns.
