Recently had the opportunity to report on a paper that is yet to be
published, by Scott Elliott at LANL. I got him to speculate on the
implications of his work for seeding arctic waters in order to make
sure the methanotrophs up there have enough nutrients to oxidize
emissions from clathrates. This is all extremely preliminary, but I
thought the group might find it of interest. Here's the last graf of
the piece:

"When asked whether or not fertilizing the Arctic Ocean with some of
the missing nutrients that could enhance the productivity of
methanotrophs, such as iron, Elliott speculates that "I would bet that
someone will very soon discuss the potential for engineering this
situation. This becomes an opportunity for the geoengineering types to
become creative.""
