It may be 'standard publishing procedure' but it is not right for a two
billion dollar company to be indemnified for unlimited risk by an old
age pensioner however small the risk. if you insist on it I will have
to withdraw the contribution.
I will be urging my colleagues, many of whom may not have spotted your
clause or fully realized its implications, not to submit work to
publishers who insist on unlimited indemnity.

Dear Professor Salter,
Thank you for your e-mail. It is Springer policy that the indemnity
clause be included in our publishing agreements, and we cannot make
exceptions to this rule. As I mentioned in my earlier e-mail to you,
this is standard publishing procedure, and the clause is included in
most publishing agreements, not just at Springer. You have been
chosen as a contributor to the Encyclopedia because we feel that you
are a leading member of your community. All that you are expected to
do is to exercise the same judgment you would for any scientific
publication. Many thanks in advance for your assistance and
understanding.
Kind regards,
Sara Kate

Dear Dr Meyers
If it is hard for you to imagine that there would be litigation then
you would not object to the removal of the clause. I will do this and
upload the agreement.
Best wishes

Dear Professor Salter,
I hope that this e-mail finds you well. Allow me to introduce myself
as an Editorial Assistant working with Springer Executive Editor David
Packer on the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology.
The indemnity clause included in your Contributor's Agreement is a
standard clause and is included in most publishing agreements. All
that you are being asked to do is to exercise the same scientific
judgment that all members of the scientific community exercise when
they publish scholarly work.
We include the indemnity clause because we cannot be in a position to
judge the appropriateness of material in so many different areas of
research, whereas you, as a specialist in the subject on which you are
writing, can far better exercise such judgment. However, it is hard
for us to imagine that there would be litigation over a piece of
scientific literature of the sort that you will be contributing to the
Encyclopedia. We hope that this helps to allay your concerns over the
inclusion of this clause in the Agreement. Please do not hesitate to
contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.
With all best wishes,
Sara Kate

Dear Dr Meyers
Following comments from Tim Lenton I have modified and uploaded my
contribution to your encyclopaedia. However I have now read the
publishing agreement as carefully as I should have done earlier and
noticed that in the final paragraph of clause 6 that you want
unlimited indemnity for all legal costs that might arise.
The probability of litigation is low but geoengineering has given rise
to heated disputes, even death threats, and the probability of
vexatious litigation is not as low as for general material. I am not
willing to take an infinitely large risk. I hope that it will be
possible for you to modify the clause.
