Hi Emily and Ron,

Here's the confusion about where the CBD meeting takes place - there are _two_ meetings planned: one in Bonn next Friday (10th June) and one in London 3 weeks later (29 June - 1 July). Quoting from [1]:

As a follow up to these decisions, a mini-workshop on biodiversity and geo-engineering will take place on 10 June 2011 in the margins of the UNFCCC climate change meetings in Bonn. Furthermore, a Liaison Group Meeting on Climate-Related Geo-Engineering as it relates to the CBD will take place in London (29 June - 1 July 2011). The outcomes of these meetings will be discussed at the sixteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice to be held in March, 2012.

I might consider attending the London event - but organising the methane workshop is taking a lot of my time. And I find the attitude of the H-O-M-E / ETC people pathetic yet aggravating [2]. For example, there is no mention of possible _benefits_ of geoengineering on biodiversity, e.g. (a) saving the Arctic sea ice along with an entire ecosystem and (b) avoiding a mass extinction following massive methane excursion and abrupt climate change.

Cheers,

John

dear geo group,

two bits of info here:

1) civil society opposes geo eg. Geopiracy: the Case Against Geoengineering <http://www.etcgroup.org/en/node/5217>.

2) there is a CBD workshop on geo in Bonn in June, following on from the moratorium.

best wishes,
Emily.

If you are attending the UNFCCC June meetings I would like to invite you to join us for a mini-workshop on biodiversity and geo-engineering to be held the 10^th June at the Gustav Stresemann Institute (a short walk from the Maritim Hotel). Additional details on the mini-workshop are in the attached document. If you are able to join us please rsvp [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>as space is limited.
Kind regards, Jaime
PS I would appreciate it if you could also disseminate this invitation through your network.

*/Background/*

Decision X/33 on biodiversity and climate change calls on Parties to ensure that no large scale climate-related geo-engineering activities that may affect biodiversity take place, untilthere is an adequate scientific basis on which to justify such activities and appropriate consideration of the associated risks for the environment and biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural impacts. The same decision calls for additional work on the possible impacts of geo-engineering techniques on biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural considerations, as well as options on definitions of climate-related geo-engineering and gaps in science-based global, transparent and effective control and regulatory mechanisms for climate-related geo-engineering.

The mini-workshop will discuss the following items:

·Potential impacts of geo-engineering activities on biodiversity; and//
·Possible gaps and limitations in the global regulatory framework for geo-engineering.//
