Hi I've recently received a slapping from a prominent scientist for slack moderation and over posting on the list. I intend to take their comments very seriously, as retaining the attention of the great and the good is all important.
This list is ultimately owned by its members, and I'm just the admin serving the community. Feedback matters to me. Therefore, I'd just like to send a few simple guidelines, which I hope meet everyone's approval. I fully accept that my posts are sometimes sloppy too, so don't think I'm not contrite about being a blatant hypocrite. Guidelines: Postings are permanently on public view, both directly and by quoting. Don't write stuff which is not appropriate for the press to read, especially if it's about someone else. Whilst this list is open to anyone, those without acknowledged expertise (ie academic qualifications and/or an institutional position) should take very great care to research thoroughly before posting. Credibility matters. A signature block which includes your qualifications and or position is good practice. Please don't be offended if I get in touch to ask more about your work and experience - it helps me evaluate your posts. Be responsive. If you post a lot on a topic and you don't get replies, chances are people aren't engaged and you should probably calm it down. Likewise, very obscure discussions may be best off list. Make it easy for your readers: Please avoid large attachments unless they are strictly necessary - a web link is usually better. Please post a plain text summary or abstract with links or attachments, as not everyone reads online. Post sparingly. Use reply to author, not 'reply to all' as your default response, unless you are adding substantial new information. Content-free responses are a direct abuse of the list, and may result in posting rights being curtailed without notice. Respect cc privacy. It's poor etiquette to copy people in if you don't know them personally. If you intend to reply to many, generally use the list only, not the cc line. Check your posts. This isn't a journal, but correct web links and citations as appropriate are expected. Keep it on topic. Posts about general climate change issues, etc. should be made very sparingly and must be specifically tied back to geo. Please do feedback to me if you have any questions or concerns. It's your list and this is for everyone's benefit. Finally: yes I know I am an offender myself! I will try harder!
