Subject: Arctic emergency - call for intervention 13th March Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2012 16:51:39 +0000 From: John Nissen <[email protected]> <mailto:[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> <mailto:[email protected]> CC: Michael Northcott <[email protected]> <mailto:[email protected]> , <[email protected]> <mailto:[email protected]> , biochar-policy <[email protected]> <mailto:[email protected]> , Geoengineering <[email protected]> <mailto:[email protected]> Hi all, As Michael says, there's still rampant scepticism about global warming in the Murdoch press. And there still is among many MPs. But glaringly obvious evidence of global warming comes from the Arctic, where temperatures have soared, and where the sea ice area could collapse [1] most likely by September 2015 but possibly in September this year. A catastrophic acceleration of methane emissions would follow almost inevitably, whether over years or decades [2]. Immediate and drastic intervention to cool the Arctic is required to prevent collapse of sea ice and reduce risk of an ensuing disaster to threaten all humanity. See Declaration of Emergency [3] and Call for Intervention at APPCCG parliamentary meeting next Tuesday, 13th March [4] to which all are invited [5]. Cheers, John [1] Collapse to less than 20% of its mean 20th Century extent, thus exposing most of the Arctic ocean to heating by sunshine in later summer and doubling the rate of Arctic warming. [2] Methane, the main constituent of natural gas, is a potent greenhouse gas, up to 105 times more potent than CO2 over 20 years, weight for weight.
