Negative Emission Technologies: Community Launch Event

Wed 13 Mar 2013 - Royal Academy of Engineers, London

*Event Summary*

The UK is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least
80% by 2050, relative to 1990 levels. We need a transformation of the UK
economy while ensuring secure, low carbon energy supplies to 2050, and face
major choices about how to do this.

The Negative Emission Technology group has been established to stimulate
and support the development of Negative Emission Technologies. Negative
Emission Technologies are the deliberate manipulation of the environment to
combat or counteract climate change. They are technologies which remove CO2
from the atmosphere in an attempt to avoid climate tipping points which
would otherwise be triggered by the emissions that have already been
produced.

Due to the nascent state of these technologies there are many challenges
that still need to be addressed including; technical capacity and
scalability, controllability, side effects, energy requirement and cost. It
is hoped that by raising awareness of the potential for NET in meeting the
UK’s carbon reduction targets future collaborations will solve these
challenges and create new opportunities for the UK.

This event will provide your business/organisation with an overview of
potential for NETs in the UK and will provide an opportunity to discuss the
challenges and opportunities

*Event objectives:*

The aims of this workshop are to:

   - Present information about the different negative emission technologies
   - Provide an opportunity for networking
   - Identify the next steps

 *Who should attend?*

The free event will be of interest to SMEs, research organisations and
consultants working in the carbon sector.

*Topics for the day*

The event will provide an introduction to the negative emission
technologies, namely ocean iron fertilisation, air capture, bioenergy with
CCS, bioenergy with biochar and enhanced weathering/mineral carbonation.

There will also be an opportunity to hear from policymakers and leading
academics on the opportunities and challenges associated with negative
emission technologies and Geoengineering in general i.e. social impacts,
impacts on biodiversity and engineering challenges.
