Oliver,

18th C travelers were very much taken by eruptions of Vesuvius and
tried to recreate the spectacle using artificial volcanoes in the
theaters of London -- "sideshow engineers repackaged their
pyrotechnical displays as volcanic paroxysm, treating patrons to
nightly effusions of smoke, cacophonic rumbles, and fiery lights
jetting from giant plaster Vesuvian cones. “The Eruption Of Vesuvius
Vomiting Forth Torrents of Fire!” promised a typical newspaper
advertisement."

So too during the French revolution, volcanic stage shows became a
symbol for the overthrow of the monarchy.

Then there's the 1794 artificial volcano on the Stone Island of Woerlitz.

Regarding weather and climate:

James P. Espy, Philosophy of Storms, 1841, p. xxiv uses the words
volcano and artificial on the same page. Undoubtedly, his theory of
lighting giant fires to cause precipitation was inspired by volcanoes,
as there are long sections on both phenomena in his book.

In the 1960s Reid Bryson was concerned about anthropogenic increases
of the Earth's albedo. He called the overall climatic effect of human
activities a "human volcano" that could upset the climatic balance.

So artificial volcano is not recent and need not refer to SRM.
