Dear All,
I would like to refer you to an interesting session on geoengineering at
AEI last week, available at
http://aei.org/events/2013/05/29/solar-radiation-management-an-evolving-climate-policy-option/
. The main message was that we need a much more robust geoengineering
research program, that would be international and transparent, and with
substantial US involvement. Among the presenters were Lee Lane and Tom
Schelling.
In contrast to previous AEI messages, I was struck by the uniform
message that global warming is a problem, it is anthropogenic, and that
mitigation is the answer to the problem. In fact, Schelling said the
proper word for those who do not say this is “deniers,” just like
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust denier.
With respect to geoengineering, the message was the same as Crutzen
(2006), that there is no evidence of mitigation happening soon, so we
should know a lot more about geoengineering. There was no argument that
geoengineering is the solution and that it is much cheaper than
mitigation. But there was also no argument that what we really need is a
massive campaign to move to a non carbon-emitting energy system.
Nevertheless, for our selfish interests, AEI is advocating a lot more
money for geoengineering research.
