The successful applicant will be involved in integrated assessment of
climate change. He will contribute to the linking of the global land use
model MAgPIE with the economy-energy-climate model ReMIND to assess the
contribution of land use based mitigation but also climate engineering
options (such as large scale afforestation) for achieving ambitious climate
policy targets in an integrated assessment modeling framework. This work
will focus on an improved representation of land use based mitigation
options such as bioenergy, avoided deforestation and afforestation and the
impact of natural disturbances such as climate change on these mitigation
strategies in MAgPIE. The position is part of the project ‘CEMICS -
Contextualizing Climate Engineering and Mitigation: Complement, Substitute
or Illusion?'. CEMICS is funded as part of the new DFG Scientific Priority
Program on Climate Engineering (spp-climate-engineering.de/home.html) and
aims at exploring the potential role of climate engineering technologies in
the portfolio of greenhouse gas mitigation options. It brings together
expertise in the fields of climate engineering assessment, integrated
assessment modeling of climate change mitigation strategies, and applied
ethics and decision analysis.A background in Economics, Environmental
Sciences, Software Engineering, Physics or a related field with a strong
interest in inter-disciplinary research is required. We expect candidates to
have quantitative training and interest in applied modelling. A strong
interest for inter-disciplinary climate related research is required. Good
programming and analytical skills are a requirement. Experience with R and
economic modeling (preferably with GAMS) is an advantage. Candidates should
be proficient in English, and be able to demonstrate the potential for
excellence in research. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Impact
Research seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they
