This paper, addressed to those interested in engineering responses to severe weather and climate-related challenges, sketches the long and checkered history of the science and technology of attempted weather and climate control. It introduces several cases of civilian and military efforts to make rain, clear fogs, redirect storms, and even shape planetary features. Two examples of early rainmaking and fog clearing provide a foundation for a discussion of Cold War era technologies applied to weather and climate control, specifically nuclear weapons, chemical seeding agents, digital computers, and rockets and satellites. As history shows, intervention into natural systems does not result in precise control; nor does it lead to social acceptance of the practice.
