List:

I hesitate to send this on, but the link below leads to the best short
(half-hour) video on biochar I have seen (and it just came in - about 18 months
later than was probably planned). It answers several questions raised recently
on this list. Obviously very positive and maybe overly so - but it does have
new information. It comes without too much of a commercial flavor, since it
comes from multiple voices - all presented to a mostly technical audience). I
think all the presenters have a commercial background. The main academic
biochar researchers are not in this video.

The most surprising statement to me in here was (at about the 18.5
minute mark) a claimed potential 100 ppm drop in CO2 using 3% of global land
area and 40 years ( I guess mostly using miscanthus). I have been saying 10%
of land and 50 years. Another surprise (at the 15 minute mark) was a claimed 4
to 8 year doubling time for out-year effects, giving and needing exponential,
not linear, growth in conversion facilities and no lands. Another surprise
was a statement (at 18.3 minutes) that this same company could get to 100 quads
(of carbon negative energy) when they have gone from 400 US plants in 2018 to
2000 plants worldwide. I have not personally checked these statements, but
this company has some influential financial backers presumably checking such
statements.

This note and the video probably sounds like a shameless plug, but I am
hoping for a really critical review of numbers like the two above by this list
- either on list or privately. This list probably contains as critical an
audience as any in the world. I know five of the 7 presenters quite well and
was at this 2012 conference. I promise to follow-up with any of the presenters
on anything that seems questionable to anyone on this list.

        Ron
