They write that 'sunlight scattering would also be ineffective in
addressing polar climate emergencies not least because it cannot
directly affect temperature during the polar winter.' They have got in a
muddle.
During winter the poles are radiating heat out to deep space at about
200 watts per square metre. It is being replaced by heat in ocean
currents and winds. Any mechanism which intercepts some of this heat
anywhere along the path from the equator, will cool the poles.
This is shown at in figure 2 of doi:10.1088/1748-9326/4/4/045112
However Jon-Egil Kristjansson has shown that aerosol over the poles in
winter works in the wrong way because it can act as a blanket and
reflect back some of the outgoing radiation.
