Salary: Salary is competitive, determined based on experience.

Location: Stanford, CA

Postdoctoral Opportunities: Global Energy Systems, Decision-making, and
Climate

*Carnegie Institution for Science Department of Global Ecology on the
Stanford campus.*

We are seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researchers who can lead
scientific or technical research projects that can contribute substantively
to facilitating a transition to a global near-zero emission energy
economy. We also seek to improve understanding of other strategies that
could potentially be applied to reduce climate damage (e.g., adaptation,
solar geoengineering). We are also very interested in social science
research aimed at helping groups make better decisions. Successful
candidates might use integrated assessment or climate models, but could
choose to use other tools.

We have done a number of studies related to analyzing the global energy
system in the context of greenhouse gas emissions (e.g., estimating the
scale of deployment of near-zero emission technologies needed to stabilize
climate while allowing for economic growth, evaluating role of
infrastructural inertia, analyzing carbon dioxide emissions embodied in
international trade), as well as a variety of climate and carbon-cycle
studies.

Successful candidates will play a major role in planning and executing
these investigations, working in a diverse group that will include climate
modelers, energy-system analysts, and field researchers. We are looking to
develop an exciting collegial atmosphere with a lot of personal freedom,
wherein each group member both leads research projects and collaborates on
projects led by others.

Positions are available now, and we are flexible with regard to start
dates. The initial term will be for one year with the potential for renewal
for up to a maximum of four years. The positions will involve working with
Ken Caldeira at the Carnegie Institution for Science Department of Global
Ecology on the Stanford University campus. Carnegie Institution post-docs
have access to most Stanford facilities.

Key factors in our hiring decisions will be intelligence, thoughtfulness,
creativity, motivation, productivity, and a record of successful scientific
or technical publication. We are flexible with regard to your domain of
expertise.

Informal inquiries about these positions can be made by emailing Ken
Caldeira at <[email protected]
