Sensational headlines, burying the lede, he-said-she-said reporting and
opinion-centric reporting (i.e. what do you, person off the street,
think about issue x?) increased when we deregulated the media.
Deregulation produced massive media consolidation. (Over the weekend I
read a thread arguing that corporate consolidation in general is the
most important issue of our time.)

UNL is holding science pitch contests for students... a skill that will
help them communicate their research to the general public.
Jesse's examples (below) could be used in an interview, press release,
tweet, converted into an infographic etc. But if scientists don't have
the time or inclination to develop PR skills... then scientists need to
hire someone who can do it for them.
Is there a society for those seeking remedies to catastrophic global
warming?
Or... one could become a member of an existing group that covers
remediation. If those groups don't have a PR person... help them get one.
Not sure whether Union of Concerned Scientists is a good fit for this
group, but UCS's blog http://blog.ucsusa.org/ and twitter feed
