Ocean Visions: Finding Ocean-Based Solutions to Society’s Greatest Global Challenges The ocean seascape is changing rapidly, and not uniformly in a negative way – there are positive trends and accomplishments. We are transitioning from primarily doom and gloom messages about the ocean to a new age of ocean optimism — where ocean-based solutions for mitigating and adapting to society’s greatest global challenges are being developed and implemented. In this session, ocean scientists, social scientists, and engineers will describe innovative approaches that will enable society to address climate, energy, and food security during the 21st century while simultaneously maintaining biodiversity and a sustainable global environment. Topics to be discussed will include: algae-based aquaculture for food and fuels, conservation of marine protected areas in a changing ocean, elimination of marine pollution, harnessing energy from the sea, human-assisted adaptation of marine ecosystems and living resources to ocean warming and acidification, ocean-based climate mitigation and CO2 sequestration technologies, ocean optimism.
