PhD Studentship in Marine Cloud Brightening

A PhD studentship supported by the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge
(CCRC) is available to work in the area of climate repair and Marine Cloud
Brightening (MCB) in particular. MCB is a technique proposed for increasing
the albedo (reflectivity) of clouds thereby reflecting a small proportion
of incident sunlight back into space thereby cooling the planet.

This PhD position will examine the effectiveness of MCB and might include -
for example - development of effective spray nozzles for the formation of
droplets at the right size; the modelling of climate impacts of MCB; ethics
and governance issues of MCB research and outdoor experiments; impacts of
MCB on local communities; and design of spray systems for large-scale
deployment of MCB.

The successful candidate will be based in Cambridge and the expectation is
that they will reside at Downing College.

Funding is available for UK students. For overseas students additional
funding might be available through the Cambridge International Scholarship
Scheme. Potential applicants are also encouraged to visit the Cambridge
Trust website and the university's website on graduate funding for more
information regarding funding opportunities.

The research project is available under the supervision of Dr Hugh Hunt or
Dr Shaun Fitzgerald.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a
good 2.1 degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in Engineering or
Physical Sciences. Some understanding of climate systems would be an
advantage but is not essential.

To apply for this studentship, please send your two page CV to Dr Hugh Hunt
([email protected]) to arrive no later than 16 June 2021.

Please note that any offer of funding will be conditional on securing a
place as a PhD student. Candidates will need to apply separately for
admission through the University's Graduate Admissions application portal;
this can be done before or after applying for this funding opportunity.
Note that there is a £70 fee for PhD applications. The applicant portal can
be accessed via: www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegpdpeg
<https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegpdpeg>. The
final deadline for PhD applications is 30 June 2021, although it is
advisable to apply earlier than this.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and
encourages applications from all sections of society.
