Dear All, You are cordially invited to join an interactive webinar on *How Can We Preserve the Himalayan Glaciers and Save Billions of People?* The webinar will start at 10 AM Eastern Time (2:00 PM GMT, 8:30 PM IST) for the duration of 1.5 hours on December 5, 2021. To join the event, please register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMtceCgqDIqHNeDQKP7UY8BFELmFXyNsKDt. After registering, you will receive an email containing information about joining the webinar.
Abstract The Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than in any other part of the world and, per the IPCC, the eastern Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2050. These glaciers feed the 10 largest rivers in Asia, and nearly two billion people depend on these rivers for drinking water, agriculture, and hydroelectric power while three billion people consume the food produced in these river basins. The rapid melting and disappearance of these glaciers are putting the life and livelihood of these people at great risk. We need immediate intervention to protect the billions of people of the regions and prevent the world from the occurrence of a catastrophe. This webinar will discuss an integrated local solution to slow the melting and present some promising simulation results of such a solution to the melting of the Arctic. Speakers: 1. *Dr. Soumitra Das, Co-Founder and President, HCI:* Dr. Das is a passionate advocate for restoring climate and making it healthy for future generations. His current efforts include creating awareness of climate change, stopping the melt of the Himalayans glaciers, and reforestation n India. He also worked in Fortune 500 companies such as Motorola, Corning, Lucent Technologies, Philips Electronics, AT&T in various capacities. He has published numerous papers and spoken in many academic and industry conferences. Dr. Das holds an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from George Mason University. His motto in life is, "leave this world a little better than you found it''. 2. *Dr. Subarna Bhattacharyya, Co-Founder, and CEO, Climformatics (winner of CleanTech Open 2014 Western US Finalist Award*): She has a novel mission to predict climate towards an environmentally sustainable future. Her passion for climate data science led her to work on climate modeling with the (International Panel for Climate Change) Nobel winning group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory simulating abrupt climate change. With two Masters, in Physics and Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics, Subarna has 20 years of interdisciplinary background mostly applying stochastic dynamics, statistical time series, and wavelets to understand climate data. She gave invited talks at CalTech, Columbia University, IEEE, LLNL, published in leading journals, and worked as a Catastrophe Risk Modeler.
