Dear colleagues, C2G are inviting young leaders across the world to apply for a unique learning project around the governance of climate-altering approaches
The Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G) has secured funding to deliver a unique one-year project to support building the capacity of a small group of youth leaders from across the world, to learn about strengthening governance around potential climate-altering approaches known as solar radiation modification<https://www.c2g2.net/solar-radiation-modification/>, and to catalyse further learning amongst their peers. The latest assessment report<https://www.ipcc.ch/assessment-report/ar6/> from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) makes it clear that despite growing evidence of climate action, the likelihood of exceeding the Paris Agreement<https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement/the-paris-agreement> temperature goals is increasing. While the focus for climate action is, and should continue to be, on emissions reductions, removals, and adaptation, given the scale and pace of the crisis we now face, other more uncertain response measures such as solar radiation modification (SRM)<https://www.c2g2.net/solar-radiation-modification/> are coming under increasing scrutiny. While some scientists suggest these measures may be able to help reduce some risks we face from climate impacts, others highlight the new risks they may introduce if we even consider them. Worryingly there is currently no dedicated, formal international governance for research, development, demonstration, or deployment of SRM. C2G seeks to catalyse the creation of effective governance for climate-altering approaches such as SRM but is impartial regarding their potential use. These are choices for society to make. Young people are currently largely absent from early-stage conversations about SRM and its governance, even though they will inherit the consequences of decisions made about such approaches in coming years. For this reason, it is important that young people start to become aware, informed and engage in international conversations about SRM and the need for its governance. Between 2022-23 C2G will support up to six youth leaders from around the world, aged between 19-24 to learn more about the need for strengthening governance around SRM and to catalyse similar learning amongst their peers. The project will provide participants with a unique opportunity to learn from a diverse range of leading international experts about the governance issues surrounding SRM and consequently contribute to emerging global discussions around this issue. The deadline for applications is 19 June 2022 and interested young people should visit the project webpage for more information and guidance on how to apply.
