Subject: Economic Geography Position at South Carolina
To: [email protected]

   Colleagues:****

The University of South Carolina has an opening for an economic geographer,
to be jointly appointed between the Department of Geography (which will be
the tenure home) and the Environment and Sustainability Program. The
Department of Geography has long viewed the need for an economic geographer
as a very high departmental priority, and we are excited to finally have
the opportunity to fill this position. There are tremendous research and
teaching opportunities here, both within the Department of Geography and
across campus. ** **

We are not looking for a specific theoretical perspective or methodological
toolkit – we are looking for someone pushing a research frontier, and who
will complement and extend the existing strengths in Geography and
Environment and Sustainability. We’re not terribly prescriptive in the ad
because we know that the discipline is large enough that there are likely
interesting candidates out there who could fit this description in ways we
can’t imagine. ****

I strongly encourage job seekers on this list to consider applying – we are
interpreting this position very broadly, and therefore those working on
questions of cultural and political ecology are very much of interest to
this search. I am on the search committee, and am happy to field questions
from prospective candidates.****

The Department of Geography and the Environment and Sustainability Program
at the University of South Carolina invite applications for a full-time
tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of
Economic Geography with a primary research focus on environmental
resources, issues, or sustainability to begin August 16, 2014.****

The successful candidate, who will have a Ph.D. in geography or a closely
related field in hand by August 15, 2014, should have a research program
that provides insights into the economic geographies of human-environment
relations and actively engages with current theoretical discussions and
debates within economic geography and across disciplines. The position is a
joint appointment between the Department of Geography (
http://artsandsciences.sc.edu/geog/), which will serve as the tenure home,
and the Environment and Sustainability Program (http://www.environ.sc.edu/),
an interdisciplinary home for academic programs, research and scholarship,
and community outreach activities that link environmental and
sustainability initiatives at the University of South Carolina. The
successful candidate will thus join an active, top-ranked geography program
while also working and teaching within a dedicated, campus-wide community
of scholars focused on developing and providing research- and policy-based
solutions for the planet’s environmental and societal needs. Preference
will be given to candidates who possess a strong record of publication and
extramural funding, research and teaching interests that complement and
expand existing strengths in human and physical geography and GIScience,
and a demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary groups both on
and off campus.****

Candidates should provide a letter of application describing current and
future research activities and teaching interests/experience, a curriculum
vitae, and the names and contact information (including e-mail addresses)
of at least three referees. All materials should be submitted
electronically to Dr. Kirstin Dow, Search Committee Chair ([email protected]).
Screening of applications will begin October 4, 2013, though applications
may be considered until the search is completed*.*****

The University of South Carolina's main campus is located in the state
capital, close to the mountains and the coast. The Carnegie Foundation for
the Advancement of Teaching has designated the University of South Carolina
as one of only 73 public and 32 private academic institutions with “very
high research activity” and also lists USC as having strong focus on
community engagement. The University has over 31,000 students on the main
campus (and over 46,000 students system-wide), more than 350 degree
programs, and a nationally-ranked library system that includes one of the
nation’s largest public film archives. Columbia, the capital of South
Carolina, is the center of a greater metropolitan area with a population
over 750,000.****

The University of South Carolina is an affirmative action, equal
opportunity employer. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply. The
University of South Carolina does not discriminate in educational or
employment opportunities or decisions for qualified persons on the basis of
race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual
orientation, or veteran status.****
